My Journey
I have been a competitive athlete since I was 9 years old, when I trained and competed in gymnastics. When I was 16, I started playing ice hockey. So, i dropped the spandex for skates. During this time in high school, I was on a lot of teams; ice hockey, field hockey, basketball, track and field, and baseball. I started to take my athletics seriously, and began thinking about nutrition and performance. So, when I was 16, along with other healthier choices, I stopped eating beef, pork, and lamb. At that time, I didn’t know about the horrible conditions in factory farms, or that veganism even existed.
Early in 2008, I started training in Tae Kwon Do and found that I absolutely love it! Maybe it appeals to the younger gymnast in me because I love how it allows me to challenge my physical limits without equipment, just my body. I have been in 8 tournament fights (8 wins – 0 losses), and I am a Black Belt.
In late 2010, I started seeing posts online about factory farms and the cruelty that comes with it. Before that point, I never thought about where my food came from. I didn’t know any vegetarians or vegans, or anyone that spoke about animal rights issues that concerned those raised for food. For the first time I was seeing the truth, and saw terrible images and cases of cruelty, and that marked the beginning of my personal journey to making the connection. I started seeking out information online and I was horrified. I didn’t want any part of it. Soon after, I received an information package in the mail that I had requested online. I looked at it before laying down for bed and when I woke up I decided I was going to try being vegetarian (also cut out eggs and milk). It wasn’t long afterwards that I became vegan. For my mind, body, and soul, going vegan is one of the best decisions of my life!
