Name: K. Derek Mackenzie

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

What is your diet/lifestyle: VEGAN

What attracted you to eating that type of lifestyle? I considered myself an environmentalist and an animal lover, after watching Earthlings I realized I was neither. Snowballed from there.

Which sports & activities are your passionate about? Boxing and anything outdoors. Camping, hiking, kayaking. If it weren’t for work I’d live in the bush.

What is one of your greatest athletic moments? Winning my first fight.

What goal(s) do you currently have, and how do you plan on achieving it? To be better than I was yesterday. I plan on accomplishing this by getting up every day and grinding until I have nothing left to give.

What is your favorite fuel before activity? Candy and my iPod

What is your favorite food for recovery? Carbs Carbs Carbs. Waxy Maize immediately after a training session and then a big dinner… too often lentils.

What/Who inspires you? Survivors. I’ve been very fortunate in the lack of struggle I’ve had but people that face great adversity and overcome it have to be the most inspiring people out there. Whether it be cancer, disabilities, poverty, prejudice or loss… you are the champions!

What is a random fact about you that people might not know? I love Ellen… so much.

What advice would you give to an athlete looking to go vegan? Do your research!! Too many people dive in with no information, get sick, and blame veganism. It’s not the vegetables, its you.
